The End of the World as they Know it

Ragnarok was the Norse version of all those crazy theories on how the world is going to end. Their version doesn't involve any nuclear bombs or meteorites, though there will be lots of blood....

 The Warnings

The Norse say there will be several warnings of Ragnarok. The first warning will be when the god Balder is killed. As Rangarok draws near, the world will be caught in three years of eternal winter. The serpent of Midgard called Jormundgand will uncoil and thrash as three roosters crow to warn the world that Ragnarok has come. The tidal waves from Jormungand's thrashings will cause the Jotun's ship Naglfar-- made entirely of human nails-- to start to sail the Jotuns into the final battle. And finally, Heimdall will blow his horn as a final warning to the universe that the end has come.

The Battle

Odin and the dead warriors of Valhalla will head into the fray, as will Loki leading the Jotuns. The stars will fade and the wolf Skoll will catch and swallow the sun. The frost-giants from Niflheim and Surt and his army from Muspelheim will charge into the battle, as will the hound of Helheim, Garm. Yggsdrasil (the base of the world, one should note) will quake and the dreaded Fenrir Wolf will break from its leash and kill Odin. Vidar then will kick the wolf, killing it instantly. In the meantime, Tyr will fight Garm, and the two will kill each other. Thor will fight Jormungand and kill it. However, the serpent will have poisoned Thor, who will stagger nine steps then fall dead. Loki and Heimdall will fight each other with a similar outcome. Surt will kill Freyr, as Freyr has given his sword to his servant. Surt will then light Asgard aflame, turning the universe into a blazing inferno. Only the humans Lif and Lifthrasir, the gods Modi, Vidar, Vali, Honir, Magni and Vidar, and Balder and Hod from the dead will survive.
